The Manager – Sales & Use Tax is responsible for leading and developing the Sales Tax Compliance Team. He/She is responsible for managing the timely preparation, payment and filing of sales/use tax returns for multiple U.S. states and local tax jurisdictions, Puerto Rico and Canadian VAT returns. The Manager – Sales Tax is required to provide sales tax advice and guidance to multiple business units throughout the Freeman enterprise; help identify and streamline “best practices” for multi-state sales tax compliance; conduct taxability research on sales and purchase transactions including applicable exemptions and other special projects. This is a hands-on position that requires the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment, communicate effectively and to work well with others. The ideal candidate will be solution driven and have multi-state sales/use tax.

  • Manages the compliance process to ensure that returns are filed and paid accurately and timely by reviewing and approving the sales/use tax and Canadian VAT returns, supporting work papers, and applicable payment request documentation.

  • Manages the archiving of all compliance documentation to ensure that complete files are available to support completion and resolution of audits and notices received.

  • Manages the tax rate update process to ensure that accurate and current sales/use and VAT rates are included in our systems and documentation.

  • Verifies, on a monthly basis, the accuracy of the sales/use tax and Canadian VAT general ledger account balances.

  • Provides guidance to internal and external customers by providing timely and accurate responses to taxability and exemption certificate validation requests.

  • Maintains current and accurate taxability matrices that are used throughout the Freeman enterprise.

  • Keeps current with sales/use tax and Canadian VAT laws, regulations, court decisions, proposed changes and other current tax issues pertinent to Freeman’s business.

  • Identifies opportunities for process improvements or for tax savings and provide solutions to make those improvements or to realize the tax savings.

  • Coaches, trains and develops direct reports.


  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance is required

  • 7 or more years of progressive experience with multi-state sales/use tax compliance

  • Experience managing sales and use tax staff a plus

  • Multi-state tax audit experience

  • Strong working knowledge of tax systems (Vertex, RIA, etc. a plus)

  • Strong working knowledge of multi-state exemptions

  • Working knowledge of all aspects of accounting practices

  • Excellent analytical and research skills

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with ability to work individually or as part of a team

  • Exceptional ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks simultaneously

  • Highly motivated and detail-oriented

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Excel and Word

  • Access, Pivot Tables, Formulas, and Macros a plus

  • SQL and other database applications a plus

  • SAP experience a plus

  • Strong commitment to providing superior customer service
