Title: Head of Pollution Legal Liability, PLLLocation: United States-Pennsylvania-King of PrussiaOther Locations: United States-New York-New York, United States-California-Brea, United States-Georgia-Atlanta, United States-Illinois-Chicago, United States-Texas-FriscoJob Number: 1800838This leadership role will join a growing team of specialized underwriters responsible for handling countrywide environmental insurance underwriting, and marketing of Pollution Legal Liability (PLL) and other environmental coverages to owners, sellers, buyers, managers, developers and lenders who have an interest in real property. This leadership role reports to the Head of Pollution and Professional and is part of a broader team focused on highly specialized coverage areas and risk management tailored solutions that are a critical component of The Hartford’s strategic growth plan, including Owner’s Protective Professional Indemnity (OPPI), Contractor’s Professional and Protective Indemnity (CPPI) and Contractor’s Pollution Liability (CPL). Working in a team environment, this position will serve as a subject matter expert within the organization, collaborating with other leaders to build out pollution product offerings, competitive risk management capabilities, sales & distribution strategies and underwriting appetite and guidelines. Product Development & Launch•Accountable for the final stages of launch for new Pollution Legal Liability (PLL) products, in partnership and with support from enterprise and Middle Market product specialists•Maintains industry expertise within highly specialized environmental coverage areas, including third party liability, first and/or third party clean up coverage, business interruption, transportation and non-owned disposal site coverage, etc.•Educates internal stakeholders and, as needed, enterprise leadership on pollution products and coverages; recommends partnerships needed to increase awareness externally through new and existing distribution channels•Collaborates closely with reinsurance partners and multinational team members to develop program parameters•Partners with internal marketing resources to develop marketing strategiesUnderwriting and P&L Management•In partnership with Head of Pollution and Professional, sets direction and executes on underwriting and sales strategies to grow pollution book of business profitably•Demonstrates ownership and accountability for P&L results of the pollution book; properly and adequately assesses risk, underwrites and partners with actuarial team to determine appropriate rate and limits for different classes of risks•Partners with Middle Market GL underwriters in order to provide an all-encompassing coverage package suitable for policyholders, while carefully assessing exposures and rating accordingly•Develops and maintains pollution-specific underwriting guidelines, and expertly applies them in order to develop a profitable book of business•Recommends and articulates direction specific to new pollution products•Facilitates cross-sell opportunities with casualty underwriting teams; coaches and mentors other team members as needed, supporting the development of lesser experienced underwriters and furthering awareness of pollution capabilities•Capable of underwriting complex business; may act with high levels of underwriting authority•Has thorough knowledge of applicable laws, regulations and governance Development and Execution of Operating Plans•Partners with business unit leadership to develop and drive annual operating plans in support of sales execution within the pollution segment of the book of business, identifying opportunities to expand reach and profitability•Drives execution of specific operating plan commitments through targeted sales and marketing activities nationwide•Knows The Hartford’s value proposition to best position us for success; is professionally demanding and understands accountabilityTeam Leadership•Will build out and manage a staff of direct report underwriters responsible for pollution legal liability sales and underwriting to facilitate expansion into targeted areas of growth•Responsible for coaching, developing and performance management, providing continuous feedback via coaching sessions, one on one interactions and performance review discussions•Accountable for understanding the skill needs of the team and individual members in order to inform local talent strategies and improve the effectiveness of the team•Pipelines new external and internal industry talentQualifications: Qualifications: •BA/BS required; advanced degree desirable•CPCU, ARM or other relevant professional designation preferred•10 years relevant underwriting experience•Significant prior experience and expertise in environmental, Pollution Legal Liability (PLL) coverages;
